As long as I can remember the ocean has always been my backyard. Many of us who live in Hawai`i have a relationship with the ocean in one way or another, whether it be gathering its offerings, or simply going in for a swim. As people who use the ocean it is our responsibility to take care of it and keep it in top shape. I am very passionate about keeping our oceans healthy and alive because the ocean is a part of me. It made me who I am today.
Recently, I wrote a research paper about runoff and the decline of ocean health. Based on what I learned from that experience, I decided to raise more awareness about it. I created a model of a rain garden, and donated it to West Maui Kumuwai so it could be used to promote the building of more rain gardens.
Keeping the ocean healthy will always be a priority for me. As long as I live I will take care of the ocean that takes care of me.
