How Recommended Brands Were Selected
We recommend pest management and fertilizer brands that are less harmful to our marine environment. To be considered less harmful, a brand must have products that pose:
1) No or low hazard to fish or other aquatic life; or
2) No or low water pollution hazard due to mobility in soil (product contains fewer active ingredients that can leach out of the root zone by rain or irrigation practices, or wash off the ground and contribute to water pollution).
The above criteria are based on product evaluation standards presented in Grow Smart, Grow Safe: A Consumer Guide to Lawn and Garden Products. Click here for a link to the guide and its product recommendations.
Products and brands were further assessed based on information available from the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), a nonprofit that takes products under rigorous review to ensure that they comply with USDA organic standards. Visit their web site to see their OMRI List of over 2,500 products.
